The Radiology Department at the Children's National Medical Center is not just a place where "scans are taken", but a complete system of safe diagnostics for children — from newborns to teenagers. Everything here is built around the child: the equipment, the doctors' approach, preparation, support and even recovery after the examination.

Radiology Department

When might a child need an examination?

Sometimes the reason is obvious — an injury, pain, or a suspected inflammation or congenital condition. But often a referral for an MRI or MSCT worries parents precisely because the symptoms may not be obvious.

For example:

  • frequent headaches, seizures, developmental delay, dizziness
  • pain in the abdomen, chest or joints
  • suspected congenital abnormalities of organs or blood vessels
  • follow-up after surgery or treatment
  • clarifying a diagnosis when ultrasound or lab tests are not enough

In such situations it is especially important to get not just an examination, but an accurate answer, because further treatment depends directly on the quality of diagnostics.

Not just an image, but an accurate diagnosis

The Center's Radiology Department offers the full range of diagnostic examinations for children:

  • expert-level magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) — 3 Tesla
  • multislice computed tomography (MSCT)
  • ultrasound diagnostics
  • digital X-ray

A 3 Tesla MRI produces highly accurate and detailed images, which is especially important when diagnosing diseases of the brain, nervous system, blood vessels and soft tissues, as well as cancer. In complex cases, it helps reveal what might go unnoticed with less sensitive diagnostics.

MSCT, in turn, allows the examination to be performed quickly, which is especially important when it is hard for a child to stay still for a long time. The Center pays particular attention to controlling radiation exposure and choosing safe protocols for children.

"My child won't be able to lie still"

This is one of the most common fears parents have — and a completely understandable one.

It is hard for young children to lie motionless for a long time, and some examinations really do require the child to be calm and still. That is why the Center offers the option of performing diagnostics with anesthesia support.

Before the examination, an anesthesiologist examines the child, assesses their condition and chooses the safest approach. During the procedure, a team of specialists works nearby and monitors the child's condition at every stage.

After the examination, the child is not left alone — they stay in a special recovery room under the supervision of doctors and medical staff until they have fully recovered. For parents, this is often a great relief: they know their child is under constant supervision.

Radiology that understands it is caring for a child

You can't simply ask a child to "lie still". You can't frighten them with complicated words or leave them alone with an unfamiliar procedure.

That is why everything in the department is adapted specifically for children:

  • examinations take into account the child's age and condition
  • protocols adapted for a child's body are used
  • where possible, parents can stay with their child
  • the team knows how to work even with the youngest patients

Every day, the department examines young children, toddlers who find it hard to cooperate during a procedure, and patients with complex neurological, oncological and congenital conditions.

How does the examination work?

For an MRI or MSCT, the child is booked in advance. The process usually looks like this:

  1. Booking in advance
  2. Preparing for the examination
  3. Consultation with an anesthesiologist — if necessary
  4. The examination itself
  5. Observation in the recovery room (if anesthesia was used)
  6. Receiving the results and the report

Ultrasound and X-ray examinations are available through an electronic queue.
