A child's posture: when "just slouching" is already a reason to see a doctor
Parents often think slouching is just a habit. But in fact, posture is about the condition of the spine and muscles and a child's healthy development.
It is important to understand:
children don't always "grow out of" posture problems.
If they are ignored, they can later lead to back pain, reduced stamina and limited movement.
What to look out for
Common signs:
- the child slouches
- one shoulder is higher than the other
- the shoulder blades "stick out"
- the child gets tired of sitting quickly
- the child complains of back pain
Even one of these symptoms is a reason to see an orthopedist.
Poor posture or scoliosis?
This is the question parents ask most often.
Poor posture is a reversible condition
Scoliosis is a change in the structure of the spine that requires monitoring and treatment
You can't tell them apart "by eye" — a doctor's assessment is needed.
How treatment works (an evidence-based approach)
Effective correction is not a single method but a system:
- therapeutic exercise (the foundation)
- work on muscle balance
- building good habits
- monitoring progress
Massage and swimming can complement treatment, but they don't replace it.
When is surgery needed?
Rarely, but it matters:
- for severe and progressive scoliosis
- if internal organs are affected
- if conservative treatment does not help
In all other cases, treatment starts without surgery.
Why it's important to come in on time
The earlier a problem is detected, the easier it is to correct and to avoid serious problems in the future.
Why choose the Children's National Medical Center
At the Center, a child is not "examined in parts".
We work as a team:
an orthopedist, neurologist, rehabilitation specialist and exercise therapy doctor decide on the treatment together when needed.
All examinations can be done in one place:
- X-ray
- MRI
- MSCT
This makes it possible to make an accurate diagnosis quickly and start the right treatment right away — without losing time or unnecessary prescriptions.
We use an evidence-based approach and tailor treatment to each child.
