Umarov Bakhtiyorjon Yatgarovich

Director of the Center, Doctor of Medical Sciences (DSc)

Bakhtiyorjon Yatgarovich Umarov is a surgeon, Doctor of Medical Sciences (DSc), researcher and healthcare leader. His professional work spans clinical medicine, research, the development of high-tech medical care and the introduction of modern management methods in medical institutions.

Since 2023 he has headed the Children's National Medical Center of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The Center is a multidisciplinary medical institution specializing in specialized and high-tech medical care for children.

Leadership of the Children's National Medical Center

Since his appointment as director in 2023, Bakhtiyorjon Umarov has been developing the Children's National Medical Center as a modern clinical, research and educational institution.

The priorities of his leadership include improving the quality and safety of medical care, refining clinical processes, introducing international standards, developing modern diagnostic and treatment methods, strengthening the workforce and expanding international cooperation.

Particular attention is paid to building a system of care centered on the needs of children and their families, improving cooperation between specialists of different fields, raising the professional level of medical staff and introducing modern management solutions.

JCI international accreditation

One of the Center's most important achievements under Bakhtiyorjon Umarov's leadership was receiving Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation in 2024.

The Children's National Medical Center became the first public medical institution in Uzbekistan to receive this international accreditation.

JCI standards cover the key areas of a medical organization's work, including patient safety, quality of care, clinical risk management, infection control, safe medication use, organization of medical processes and cooperation between specialists.

The accreditation was the result of systematic work by the Center's team to meet international requirements for the quality and safety of medical care, and an important step in integrating the institution into the international medical community.

Developing high-tech medical care

Under Bakhtiyorjon Umarov's leadership, the Center is expanding its capacity to provide specialized care for children, perform complex surgery and use high-tech diagnostic and treatment methods.

Pediatric cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, oncohematology, orthopedics, urology, minimally invasive surgery and other specialized areas of pediatrics play an important role in the institution's work.

The growth of clinical capabilities is closely linked to improving diagnostics, introducing modern treatments and expanding cooperation between different medical specialties.

One of the priority management goals is to create conditions in which a child can undergo comprehensive diagnostics, receive specialized treatment and further follow-up within a single medical institution.

Participation in national healthcare programs

Bakhtiyorjon Umarov's work is also connected with the implementation of nationally significant initiatives aimed at expanding children's access to specialized medical care.

In 2026 he was appointed head of the national working group on providing children with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) with the medical equipment, prosthetic and orthopedic devices and rehabilitation aids needed for treatment and care at home.

This work involves coordinating medical and specialized organizations, developing mechanisms to provide children with the medical supplies they need and improving the system of care for patients with severe chronic diseases.

International cooperation and professional development

One of the important areas of Bakhtiyorjon Umarov's work is strengthening the international ties of the Children's National Medical Center, developing joint educational and research programs, and bringing international experience into clinical and management practice.

As part of its international cooperation, the Center is developing partnerships with leading medical institutions, research organizations and educational partners in the Republic of Korea, Germany and other countries.

Cooperation with Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin

In June 2025, Bakhtiyorjon Umarov met with a delegation from Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, one of Germany's leading university medical centers.

The talks focused on prospects for cooperation in pediatrics, improving intensive care, developing nursing, introducing high-tech medical care and professional training for specialists.

Particular attention was paid to establishing research and clinical cooperation, exchanging professional experience between specialists and using international experience to further improve the quality of care at the Children's National Medical Center.

Cooperation with medical institutions in the Republic of Korea

The Children's National Medical Center was established using modern Korean medical technologies and organizational approaches, so cooperation with the Republic of Korea plays an important role in its work.

Bakhtiyorjon Umarov is involved in developing cooperation with the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH), as well as with clinical and educational institutions in Korea.

In April 2026, a delegation from the Children's National Medical Center led by him completed a professional training program in hospital administration and healthcare management at Pusan National University Yangsan Hospital in the Republic of Korea.

The program focused on management models of modern hospitals, strengthening the management skills of senior staff and training managers for a new generation of medical institutions.

The knowledge and international experience gained are of great practical value for developing management processes, improving organizational efficiency and raising the quality of medical services.

International professional education

Over the course of his career, Bakhtiyorjon Umarov has studied and completed advanced training in the USA, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Korea and European countries.

Alongside surgical practice and medical research, his professional interests include modern models of healthcare organization, healthcare management, the development of medical institutions and the application of international management experience.

Research

Bakhtiyorjon Umarov conducts research in surgery, clinical immunology, vascular surgery, infectious complications and improving treatment methods for complex surgical diseases.

His research focuses on the pathological processes that affect the outcomes of surgical treatment, methods for predicting complications and improving diagnostic and treatment strategies.

Research in vascular surgery

In 2023, Bakhtiyorjon Umarov defended his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) dissertation in medical sciences, specializing in surgery.

The research topic was "Correction of endothelial dysfunction in the surgical treatment of atherosclerotic lesions of the carotid arteries".

The work studies impaired vascular endothelial function in patients with atherosclerotic lesions of the carotid arteries and improving methods of surgical treatment for this condition.

The research addresses vascular pathophysiology, prevention of complications and improving the effectiveness of surgery for diseases of the major blood vessels.

Doctoral dissertation (DSc) in surgery and clinical immunology

In 2025, Bakhtiyorjon Umarov submitted his Doctor of Medical Sciences (DSc) dissertation in Allergology and Immunology and in Surgery.

The dissertation topic is "Clinical and immunological aspects of predicting and preventing the generalization of infection in patients with long-term non-healing wounds".

The work was carried out at the Abu Ali ibn Sino Bukhara State Medical Institute.

The scientific advisors were Academician Tamara Uktamovna Aripova and Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Bakhtiyor Zarifovich Khamdamov.

The research addresses a pressing problem in surgical practice — the risk of severe systemic complications due to long-term non-healing wounds and the spread of local infection.

The work examined the clinical, immunological and morphological changes characteristic of chronic wounds. Particular attention was paid to cellular and humoral immunity, the activity of inflammatory mediators and the mechanisms that influence the development of infectious complications.

The findings made it possible to propose additional approaches to predicting the generalization of infection, assessing the severity of inflammation and choosing preventive measures.

Based on the research results, guidelines were developed on preventing the generalization of infection in long-term non-healing wounds and on identifying morphological and immunological changes in these patients.

Putting research into practice

The research findings have been implemented at multidisciplinary medical centers in the Navoi, Samarkand and Bukhara regions.

According to the dissertation materials, the approaches developed made it possible to optimize diagnostic and treatment strategies, improve early detection of infectious complications and use the resources of medical institutions more efficiently.

The implementation documents also include economic calculations: a reduction in the average hospital stay from 21 to 14 days and lower treatment costs per patient.

The practical value of the research lies in developing approaches that improve the treatment of complex chronic wounds, reduce the risk of infectious complications and improve the outcomes of surgical care.
