Pathomorphology Department

Histological and cytological diagnostics

The Pathomorphology Department of the Children's National Medical Center performs high-precision morphological diagnostics of diseases in children, providing clinicians with key information for making a diagnosis and choosing a treatment strategy.

Our work is especially important in complex clinical cases, including cancer and rare diseases.

Main areas

  • morphological diagnosis of diseases in children
  • examination of biopsy and surgical specimens
  • immunohistochemistry (IHC) for tumor verification
  • digital pathology
  • neuropathology
  • molecular genetic diagnostics of tumors

What makes the department unique

The department is one of the country's leading pathology centers, with a focus on pediatric oncology.

We work in line with international standards (WHO, ICCR, USCAP) and use modern digital technology to analyze complex clinical cases.

Particular attention is paid to accurate and rapid verification of the diagnosis, which directly affects the choice of treatment and the child's prognosis.

How diagnostics work

  1. Receiving the specimen — biopsy or surgical material arrives at the laboratory
  2. Preparation — the specimen is processed and microscope slides are prepared
  3. Analysis — microscopic examination and, if needed, immunohistochemical tests
  4. Diagnosis — an expert report is issued that determines the further treatment strategy

The results are sent to the attending physician to support the clinical decision.

Our team

The department is staffed by qualified pathologists and laboratory specialists under the leadership of Dr. Sukhrob Tashmatov.

The team regularly completes international training placements and takes part in research projects in pediatric oncology.

Complex cases

  • successful verification of brain tumors in children
  • differential diagnosis in the most complex clinical situations
  • accurate morphological diagnosis that guides the choice of life-saving treatment

The department's expertise makes it possible to clarify diagnoses that had previously remained unclear and directly influences patients' treatment outcomes.
